Safety is one of our top priorities at Bison USA. As seasons change, your truck requires different types of maintenance, and road conditions change, too. We’re here to help you navigate what to look out for, and when.
Summer Driving and Maintenance Guide
Summer Driving Tips
- Summer brings an increase in pedestrian and bicycle activity. Watch for inattentive pedestrians at intersections. If you see another vehicle stopped, they may be yielding to a pedestrian. Do not pass unless you are sure a pedestrian is not crossing in front of the stopped vehicle.
- Summer is road construction season. Stay alert and increase following distance so you can react sooner.
- Motorcycle use increases in the summer months. They can easily be lost in blind spots of all vehicles, but tractor trailers have larger blind spots than passenger cars. Scan mirrors regularly and avoid quick lane changes. Signal and be sure to be seen to give the motorcycle rider time to adjust if needed.
- Distracted drivers have increased substantially with the arrival of handheld technology. Increase following distance and watch others for driving behavior that is consistent with distracted driving. Inconsistent speed, drifting in and out of the lane of traffic, and remaining stationary when a stoplight turns green are just a few of the signs.
Summer Maintenance Tips
- Tires – Proper tire inflation can help prevent blow outs. Sidewalls of under-inflated tires flex and build excess heat and pressure, which can lead to a blowout. While doing pre- and post-trips, look for unusual wear and low tread depth.
- Oil – Extreme hot temperatures can break down oil faster than moderate temps. Stay current with oil changes.
- Engine coolant – Check levels regularly. Look for leaks and hoses that are starting to crack.
- Batteries – Heat contributes to battery corrosion. Inspect batteries to ensure there isn’t an excessive corrosion build up.
- Belts – Belts run many devices. Check for cracks or unusual wear.
