Important Things To Know About a Career in Trucking

Operating as an over-the-road (OTR) driver is a lifestyle as much as it is a job. The demands can be intense: 300 days on the road, or more, is not unusual. This time spent on the road will limit the amount of time you can spend it home. This certainly is one important consideration for you and your spouse if you have one to take into account before entering a career in trucking. At H.O. Wolding, we offer a range of OTR truck driving jobs for qualified candidates.

If you are looking for a flexible opportunity that allows you to enjoy long stretches of solitude each day, and one that is distinctly different from most other types of employment, this career may be worth checking out.

Here are some important things to know about a potential career as a truck driver:

Early Days and Late Nights

Your days can start very early. Some drivers prefer to drive when it is light, and others when it is dark. OTR truck drivers may drive at various times of the day or night, so long as they make their deliveries on time.

Long Hours

Over an eight-day period, you may ask to work for up to 70 hours. Once you have 70 hours, you will not be permitted to drive until fulfilling 34 hours off duty. You are also not permitted to drive for longer than 11 hours in a single day. In addition, a 10-hour break is required after the conclusion of your Hours of Service (H.O.S).

Long Mileage

Many drivers are expected to traverse about 125,000 miles per year. This works out to 500-miles/day. That is a lot of driving!

A Chance to See More of the Country

A very unique and substantial perk that comes with a career in trucking is the ability to visit areas of the country you might not otherwise see. If you work for a premier trucking carrier, you will get to drive a comfortable, modern truck that helps you stay focused and alert with ergonomically designed and manufactured seating.
